I need to deploy Instant Messaging for our company. We have a single Ex2K server and messaging should be internal only. I've read the chapter on IM in tech net, yet it seems geared towards including IM with your install. Since I did not do the install, I can not say if the messaging was included in the install, or currently running. Anyone have any good reference material or how to articles for the server side installation, or confirmation of installation and settings??

ESM shows IM Settings under Global Settings, yet there is nothing too revealing. Is there a particular service that needs to be installed and running?

Curious...

The IM is an optional component of Exchange that is selectable during the initial install OR during maintenance install. So, if you've determined that it's not installed already, pop in your Exchange CD, and in one of the forms you're able to select the installation of the IM component - it shouldn't effect the rest of Exchange, but do your backups! I suppose you could pop in the CD to check if IM has been installed too, then hit cancel or whatever if it is installed already.

My quick google search came up with this Word document, which looks like the one I used. However, I think my copy came from somewhere directly off the Exchange site.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link. It looks like the robust version of the KB article I just used. KB 266643 is just the text without the pics. Both work well.
Cheers!

Out of curiousity, how is ESM working for you? I used to use it and had terrible luck. I ultimately got rid of it in favor of SecurityExpressions (best thing I ever did). But I wonder if I'm alone in my frustration with ESM?

Hmm.. bit of a late reply, but oh well.

ESM has been quirky in recognizing people as being logged on or not. Often, the "x has logged on" message arrives several (i.e. >10) minutes after logon has occured. People are displayed as "Not Logged On" at weird times. I haven't tried debugging it too much, though.

As a whole, better than nothing. Would I depend on it? No, at least not without getting a bit more reliability out of it.
