Hi,
A new schema is required on our AIX system and I'm trying to weigh pros and cons of creating a new instance or adding it to an existing instance. Other than the CPU/mem overhead assoicated with the extra instance, are they any security/performance tunning benefits with either options?
Thanks.

George,

Your question is rather similar to this scenario: "Someone I know needs transportation. Should I let them ride in my car, or should we buy a new car?"

We don't have all the facts to help you make such a decision. Absent those additional facts, and due to the simplicity of the one fact we do know (i.e., "A new schema is required"), I see no good reason to build an entire Oracle instance for the sake of a single schema.

One of the arguments I heard was: "if we put this schema onto its own instance we can tune the database specifically for this schema without impacting others". In your opinion, is that a valid argument?

I don't think so. When I think tuning, I think of tuning a table or a particular statement, not an entire database. I'd be interested to see an example when tuning would affect other schemas.

If the new schema is going to be for a data warehouse and the database is currently set up/tuned for OLTP (or vice versa), then you might have a valid argument. Otherwise, I don't think so; if all applications are for the same general purpose (e.g., OLTP) then they should be able to work and play well together. Could they be better tuned if each app/schema had its own instance? Probably - but at what cost?!

Hi,
Just to weigh in on this:
Where I worked we had 2 basic server configurations, one had Oracle schemas that were mostly OLTP while the other was specific to Oracle Data Warehousing work.

That way, each server, as well as the instance running on it, could be optimized for its role..We never could see any real issue with multiple schemas in the same instance when it came to performance or tuning.
