What is the best product for me to create an install file that will update an egsisting install on another machine. I have an app that has been sent out to about 30-40 centers in ny, it is a photo archival application. I need to send updates out, including an updated .exe updated images, data, and crystal reports. At present if I try to run an install on a machine I keep getting the, this product has already been installed. I have VFP 8 with the Install Shield 4 Express Limited, would purchasing the Full Express fix this.

I've been to InstallShield training seminar, and someone asked similar question: how do I enable update instead of un-install+install? The answer was "Yes, you can do it" but I do not remember the details. Anyway, IS Express Limited shipped with VFP can't do it, you need at least full blown IS Express. I have used IS Express 3.51, and there's a step Update or something to that effect.

HTH.

lashwarj,

I would think that you could create a brand new install (so that it doesn't think that it is the previous one - new name etc.) and set the files to always overwrite and you should be fine. I say this without having run Installshield express or any of the light versions in some time. I prefer Installshield Professional and the ability to write my own install scripts and have a very wide-range of dialog boxes at my disposal to make the install as intuitive and painless for the user as possible, not to mention better for me since I'm the one they are going to call when and if they mess up during the install and have problems.

Lashwarj,

I'm not sure if this is the answer you are looking for, but my understanding is that an InstallShield setup can be run in maintenance mode. In other words, you can make it update any existing files, leaving other files intact.

However, for that to work, I would guess that your original install must also have been done with IS.

Sorry if this is a bit vague.

Mike
