I have successfully installed Virtual PC 5.0. Now, if only I could figure out how to install Windows on it...

I have a copy of Windows 95 on a CD, and VPC can't seem to recognize that the CD is there.

I also have a copy of windows XP home as an exe file I downloaded, and I don't know how to install that onto VPC.

Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you!

What I did for win 95:
start vpc up. Once in dos, pop the 95 cd in.
Type E:/ and return.
Then type setup and return. Follow instructions.
Hope this helps.

p.s: I can't go on the net with my own windows version; be ready for problems if you're not using the os supplied by connectix

I also want to install Windows (XP pro) on Virtual PC which comes bundled with DOS. Since I have already purchased Windows XP for my PC desktop I don't want to have to purchase Virtual PC bundled with XP for my Apple lap top!

Is this possible and will I run into difficulties as you suggest???

i just received VPC 6 and am trying to install win2k, i have followed the instructions above:

"What I did for win 95:
start vpc up. Once in dos, pop the 95 cd in.
Type E:/ and return.
Then type setup and return."

but to no avail. VPC just returns "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."

any suggestions?

Hi I am having problems with my Virtual PC 6

I have succesfully installed VPC 6 (Which I got off Limewire), but the OS that I downloaded will not install properly.

Maybe it is because the OS pack i downloaded is corrupt... Sorry for wasting time. I only just realised that now.

Ill write back though it I do have a problem

:)

yep

now i do have a problem - i just downloaded another OS pack of Windows XP Pro and well it won't extract the zipped file i need to in order to install Windows onto VPC 6.

any help???

I wish the people that resolved the problem posted the solution for the rest of us.

Have installed Virtual PC 6.0. Try to install Windows 95 or 98 now. Got the original Windows 95 CD. But when starting up VPC the following message appears: OS not found. Install an OS on this hard drive. How does this work?? None of the suggestions above work! Lookin forward to an answer, thanks!

You have to have the OS install CD in the drive BEFORE you start up Virtual PC. Just like on regular PCs, it'll scan the CD drive first (or floppy, if ya got one( and if it finds nothing, then will attempt to boot the OS. Since there is none, it cant :)

HOWEVER!!! Im having a reeeeally annoying problem installing WinXP on VPC6. Everything works fine, except for the F8 key. Since Im using a powerbook (newbie mac user, hehe) there's already a hotkey allocated to F8 which won't transfer to the VPC emulated window, and I NEED the F8 key to agree to the "terms" and start the installation. Does anyone know how to get around this? Ive tried using Fn+8 but thatg doesn't work either. Hmm, Im going to try and hook up an external keyboard to my PB and hope that works,

taibot- do you have a f function key that locks the keys on.... I have a keyboard the with a belkin kvm that when you change computer or when I start a virtual harddrive I need to press the button and lock the keys "on"- Hope this helps.

taibot, you may have already tried this, but go to system preferences>keyboard and mouse>keyboard shortcuts and change the function of the f8 key.
