Hi guys,

I really want to move back to Win 98 for one of my PCs. I have windowx xp pro installed but very slow. Windows 98 initially was very cool n fast in this pc.

The last time i tryed I couldn't install it. I formatted the drive even removed the MBR and nothing worked. basically the installation was failing half way i don't remember the error no but it was somehting like "General protection error" or something which was very common.

Is is it possible to install win 96 and remove XP pro? Is XP keeping some settings that makes 98 can't be installed? Has anyone ever tyed it?

Any hint will be appreciated ...

Thanks RA

bcastner,

i defintely did all. i used fdisk /mbr as far as i remember. then formated with fdisk under fat 32 but still problem. As far as i remeber 98 installed ok but whenever i was rebooting pc it was giving me " ....protection error" solution that i found at time was to run 98 under SAFE Mode -> then turn off pc (reboot didn't work) -> restart PC and 98 starts again. however, if i reboot pc still same error and i have to go to safe mod again ... which was so nasty ... so i re-installed xp again ...

i don't know why

There is no "leftover" from XP that would cause a General Protection error on a clean install of Windows 98.

You might try forum615 to resolve the protection fault.

As Bill says, there is nothing remaining of the XP. It is more likely that something has changed, possibly a memory problem.

I've started my installs with a FAT16 primary under DOS where all the install stuff resides and an extended where everything goes above and beyond the install stuff. Makes install faster and rebuilds a snap.

hi guys,

what kind of memoy problems? ... it didn't work for window 98. i format it again with ntfs and installed xp pro now everything ok just bit slow that i do't like it.

and also what you mean by you have installed your installs by FAT 16? how it can be done and how it increases the performanc?

I put the install stuff on a FAT16 partition. It installs faster from a hard drive.
It doesn't do anything for performance.

if you have 2 rows of memory (ie 2x 128mb or 1x 256 1 x 128) try removing one of them and then do the install, if the OS install fails the same way put back the memroy you remvoed and remove the other one, see if that sorts it.If you only have one memory piece in there, try and get hold of another one to temporary replace. I have seen this before and the above usually shows where the problem is.
