Hi,
Is there any way of installing Windows 98 without using cd rom?

Sure. I install Windows 98 from the hard drive EVERY time I install it, maybe 10 times a week.

> However, I usually use a CD-ROM to copy the files to the D: drive of my hard drive.
>> * Second option is to put the hard drive that you want to use in another computer, and copy the folder,
"WIN98" onto that hard drive.

Install it in the computer, boot to DOS mode, and then
> cd\win98
> type "setup" and away you go.

( This on a clean hard drive - (formatted).

Even with a CD installed I install from the hard drive. As alternatives for loading I use Lantastic running under DOS to transfer the install files across a network but I also carry a parallel port ZIP with the install files (requires 2 with 98).
Anything that allows machine to machine copy will be do the job. Ed Fair

cdroms are so inexpensive, and easy to install....
why not just install one? most high end software programs are loaded on cd's...what is the reason for not having one??

We use a backpack portable CD Rom.

We're nonprofit and purchased machines back in the day when CD Roms were too much of a luxury. It works well for me and can easily install the drivers and unplug and replug.

That way I only purchase one instead of 10 or 15.

Somehow you must get your drive to a point where it can read the CAB files.

These files are Normally located on the Windows 98 CDROM or on your HardDrive under the “Windows\Options\Cabs” folder.

__________________
%CDROM%\WIN98\*.*
(Example D:\WIN98 - all files in this directory)
-Or-
%SystemRoot%\OPTIONS\CABS
(Example: C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS – common on OEM installs & Restore Disks)

Once these files are on the HardDrive, (preferably: Windows\Options\Cabs), you have what you need to install Windows.

Now, simply Run SETUP from the CABS folder. *

*1st NOTE: It is BEST to do a 'Clean Install' of Windows. This install should also be made to the WINDOWS directory. If Windows is already installed to this drive, make sure you REName it or simply FORMAT /Q. If the later, you better have a backup of needed DATA and a boot disk.

*2nd NOTE: If you:
Run SETUP with WINDOWS already installed
-or-
Do not REName the System Root directory or the Install Directory.

You will in effect be "re-installing windows overtop of itself"
(This may help in repairing some bad system files, but NOT really the best solution for most situations).

Do Yourself a Favor -
-=Clean Install Always=-

Next, cross your fingers and start installing the drivers.

BASICALLY:
It is not as important to have the CDROM Drive as it is to have access to the CAB Files.
Which every way you decide,
Happy troop'en
