Installing VB6

First of all, I don't intend to install VB6 on my Windows 10 Pro machine. I will be using Virtual Box. I have a fully patched Windows XP with SP3 installed. I have a copy of VB6 Enterprise and SP6 (for Enterprise) as well as the mouse wheel fix and also the clear immediate plugin.

I can get VB6 installed but I cannot install SP6. It just refuses to. I run the sp6 setup and click continue, then agree and it searches for installed components. It then pops up and says "Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 6 Setup was not successfully installed"

Tried everything. Any ideas?

VB6 runs great on my main Windows 10 PC, you should try it.

Due to the number of customers I have, it is easier to have a VM per customer especially with development. Do you know how to get SP6 installed?

I never had any problems installing SP6, and I have a dozen XP and Win7 VMs.

If I recall there are some old forum posts that you can Google with regards to this error. I had a similar issue when trying to install VB6 on a new VM machine. I think it had to do with some data component which I'll never use but it was a bit of a workaround.

Most of my VirtualBox VMs are Windows 8/10. But I tend to clone them when a new version or service pack is released. I rarely do customer specific VMs - just one for each combination of Sage/PU and I have one for SQL that holds all of my databases (one for each Sage/PU combination).

Yeah, the VMs aren't customer specific. They are clones of VMs I have built with specific versions of Windows. When I get a customer that has a server with a specific version of Windows, I clone that VM, install the same version of SQL and Sage on it and away I go. If I'm doing development, I may clone the XP VM for VB development or use the one I have set up for development. If I am doing dev in Visual Studio, then I generally do that on my local machine where I have VS 2017 Pro installed.

I've read plenty of forums about not being able to install VB6 which seems to be down to a Java VM problem. Setting a file in the right place (or something like that) tells the installer it is ok and VB6 installs. Just can't get the damn service pack installed.

Yeah - VS seems dog slow in my VM. I have no idea how anyone could use it. I probably should create a 64-bit VM and give it more RAM but it's slow slow slow.

Might be easier to take a Win8 VM and upgrade it to Win10.
