Hi all,

I had a hard drive go bad on a Dell Dimension 9100. They sent a new one (SATA 160GB, Western Digital). I replaced the old with the new and plugged it in.
Upon boot, I receive no boot device available. Aha, the SP2 CD wasn't in so then I changed the boot seq.

A few moments after the setup displays that 'windows is starting setup', a BSOD pops up:

Stop 0x00000050/PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

In this case I don't believe it to be defective physical memory or incompatible software which caused a hardware driver or service request for data that was not in memory.

It happens each time a windows setup is attempted. I'm also trying different sata ports on the MB with no avail.

When you boot your computer select the option to enter the BIOS setup. Look for the system setup option for "SATA Operation." Select the option that says Combination – combination mode, which offers compatibility with versions of the operating system that do not support SATA drives. and save the changes. After setting this configuration, try the Windows XP installation and see if it will continue without the failure you have been getting.

Installing WinXP Pro with SP2 on a SATA HD

0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems (e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card).

"Stop 0x50" Error Message While Installing Windows

Other Resolutions:

Download memtesting software such as the bootable CD version of MEMTEST86+, or replace the RAM with known working sticks...

I'm surprised. It was the memory. The user was so convinced that it was a HDD, and apparently DELL too since they shipped a new HDD. Thanks all.

I also did change the SATA opperations to combination. I wonder if I can change that option back. If I do, would it really risk the OS and need to reinstall? I'd like to have both SATA hdd's installed. tx.
