i have a gigabyte ga-7vt6001394 mobo , and i am replacing my hard drive with a maxtor diamoundmax plus9 160gb sata 150 hd.

now i have been told that i need to have a floppy drive( don,t have one) on my pc to boot from and install the drivers need prior to installing windows xp.

i am a bit of a novice and my plan was to install new hd, boot from cd install windows xp

hope this is clear any help or adivce on which drivres i need and which is the best way to do it would be great

thanks for any help

I see no reason why you can't install Win XP just from the CD drive as long as your bios recognizes the HDD. If your bios does not recognize your HDD you may need to install a hdd utility ( like EZ Drive )to fool the bios into recognize the hdd ( this is when you would need a floppy drive )

You will need to supply SATA drivers to the XP install - or it won't be able to recognise the drive at all.

(got this from bcastner) is method of producing an XP install CD with the SATA drivers already included.

Or you could always temporarily connect a floppy drive to your machine (wouldn't need to 'fit' it, just connect with ribbon cable and power while you need it). They're very inexpensive.

Certainly think wolluf's second suggestion is going to be better for you pointy101.
Temperarily connecting a floppy drive (ribbon cable and power plug) plus* enable floppy drive in the bios.
Press F6 on initial XP install (when asked for 3rd party drivers have the SATA driver floppy disk to hand) this way, once loaded it will detect your new SATA drive and allow XP to install.
Create partition and format (NTFS is usually best )
continue to install

thanks for the help

i now have a floppy connected, i set my bios to boot from cd . connect new hd boot up from xp cd and then press f6 for third party drivers.

but it doesn,t work , which drivers should i have on the floppy, i have put on the xp sata drivers from my mobo discs. is this correct???

Is the floppy cable the right way around?
Does it have power?
Have you set in the bios to recognise the floppy drive?
I suspect you may not have extracted the SATA driver correctly to the floppy disk.

its doin me head in

You copied the contents of the folder on the mobo CD which contains the SATA drivers to the floppy - all the files? (apart from any readme or manual files). Did you keep the folder names from the CD?

download up todate ones too and tried those coppied everything in the driver file over as it was on the screen and still no luck

Having had a look round gigabyte site - it looks like the SATA drivers are for installation from within windows only (Google for your error and you'll get hits too). I don't know where you'd get drivers XP install can use - the Asus mobo I've installed XP on SATA did have such drivers - it uses Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATALink Controller (so I'm no SATA expert!) - which you can download from - but can't see they'd be any use for you (yours is a via 8237 according to gigabyte site).

Can only suggest using Google and carry on looking/asking on forums

thanks for the help wolfe i ll keep looking , i will not be defeated

can anyone else offer any help im total stuck with a sata hd that i can,t get windows xp on to

I do not know what your problem is? I use Sata drives with Gigabyte mainbords. Go into Cmoss sett the boot drive as scassi drive, and if you have a first boot section on top set that to sata. Then boot up with your XP cd and install. You must also enable your drive in another cmoss section. You should not need any extra drivers if you install the drives in normal mode. Please read the manual carefully it is all explained. At least I did not need any drivers for normal operations, of course you need them if you operate with a sata raid array. Regards
