Hi,

I have volunteered to install os x on couple of imacs. my 1st time installing s/w on macs.

q: is imac g3-based?

q: Any tips is appreciated, but what resources do i need. most units have 5 gig h/d and 32 meg sdram.

q:do I need another mac to prepare any setup/install diskettes???

Please give me a top 10 do's and top 10 don't

thank you in advance,

Unless the iMac is very new with a flat panel screen it is a G3. new ones are G4

no iMac ever made had a floppy so there is no worry about diskettes at all.

Get at least one 256 meg SODIMM, to upgrade memory per iMac for OSX, I would get two each 256 megs.

5 Gig HD is going to be basically full after installing the OS

(the 233 Mhz imacs came standard with 4 gig, 266 to 350 Mhz iMacs came standard with 6 gig)

if you run the apple system profier (in the apple menu usually) it will have CPU type and speed, ram size, style and location, and HD size and brand listed, also the graphics card built in as some will be better supported by OSX than others. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

HI,
Normaly when the iMac was launched back 98,they all shipped with G3 on board.
But most important is to upgrade your memory, to at least 256 MB, 512 is even better.
If you want to have a free database regarding Macintosch computer you can free download mactracker, at This database will provide you all the information about each Macintosch computer build and their technical specs.
