when i attempt to install office it looks promising for a while, but then a couple of minutes in i get the following error message appear:

error 1402. setup cannot open the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\microsoft\windows\currentversion\setup\optionalcomponents\MAPI. verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact microsoft product support services (pss) for assistance.

Any ideas how i can get round this? from what i gather i'm better off posting on this site rather than going direct to microsoft so i'll exhaust this channel first...

cheers guys

are you using an administrator enabled account when installing ?

yes! this is why i'm baffled! any other ideas?

can't believe it but double check the permissions on that registry key if you are confident of doing so (not everyone plays with the registry!)

Most likely you will need to edit the reg key and give EVERYONE full control.

when ever a user launches either word or excel 2003 pro for the first time I'm assuming a profile gets created for that user. The problem I'm having is that everytime this user launges either word or excel it wants to perform an initial install. After canceling the install either program will work okay. If I log in the program launches okay without trying to perfom an install. I'm not getting any type of error.

I'm stumped at this point. I can try and delete the users windows profile and see what happens. I did remove and re-install office 2003 with same results.
