Hi,

I'm having major problems trying to get the above to install on an XP box.

The installation just gets as far as "Installing native images" and just hangs there, all night if need be!

I've tried running the .net cleanup tool that I found on the Internet, but to no avail.

Framework 2.0 needs to be installed to run some software, so I'm kinda stuck without it!

Can anyone provide any tips, other than formatting and starting again?

Thanks a lot

Is this of any help, or have you tried the suggestions already?

Problem installing a windows update
thread779-1314490

Have a look at any Access Permissions around this area of the Registry, see what entries are there in relation to installed versions of .Net.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework

You could dump .Net 2 and go for .Net 3.

Anything showing in the Event Viewer?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Nothing works. The install for .Net 3 just never ends and the event viewer doesn't give much clues.

When installing 2 it says it installed ok, but it clearly hasn't.

I'm running out of patience with it and can see a format/re-install coming in the not too distant future!

Hi,

I tried removing some windows updates but looks like I've now broken the installation as it's not booting now.

I'll spend some time on it over the weekend, but a re-install is probably the best option.

I'll post next week and advise of the status.

have u tried "last known good config" at the F8 command? by deleting the updates its made the operating system unstable, its like deleting the boot process, hence making windows unable to boot up. if last known wont work then put the CD into the cd drive and click on repair.

IMPORTANT: not everything is 100% and important data could be lost, do this ONLY if last known good config DOES NOT work.

at the console it will ask u which 1 u want to log into type 1 then it will ask u for admin password, by default its blank, just hit enter.

type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears. The Windows Setup Dialog Box describes the Recovery Console option. To confirm the installation, click Yes.

reboot

Save your data as best you can, everything else is replaceable. I tend to agree with the original poster, in that when you start going backward and moving further away from the original problem, a format and clean install is sometimes the best solution.

You can look at these if you like.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?) and see if it boots. If it boots some of these might help.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy (not available in Safe Mode).

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

Have a look at the FixMbr, FixBoot, Bootcfg and ChkDsk commands from the Recovery Console.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Got there in the end!

I got the machine booting again but doing a repair, but .Net still wouldn't install.

So a complete re-install it was, and that finally cured it.

A bit extreme to get .Net Framework to install, but hey ho. I suppose I would've been way quicker doing that to start with rather than faffing about trying to fix it!

Thanks to all for the tips.
