I need to install Linux most likely Fedora on a Dell 2450 Server, the question is where and how can I download the Fedora version for this machine.

The reason why I am asking is because the setup of Fedora 10 for i386 machine does not start the boot process from the DVD.

Please let me know if there is another Linux distribution suitable for this machine and also where and how to download?

Please also let me know if there are any costs involved.

Thanks in advance.

I'm speaking in generalities here, as I don't use Fedora. You may have done all of this already...

I assume you downloaded the ISO image of the DVD and burned it as an ISO file to DVD and didn't just make a DVD with the actual .ISO file on it?

I assume you went into the CMOS of the server and said it was ok to boot off the DVD drive and it was the first or second item on the list of places to boot from? If I was doing it I would set it to boot off the DVD first and HD second for install and then maybe change it to HD first then DVD after install.

Otherwise maybe the image file you got just wasn't a bootable image?

Just some ideas to think about if not already done...

You can use any Linux distribution you would like. I would suggest that you start with trying to google a comparison amongst them and see if there is one that seems to be the best fit.

Ubuntu and its cousins is a very popular choice. The nice thing about Ubuntu is that it is active, with excellent public support that is tollerant of newbies, and a very well maintained distribution repository.

The costs are typically minimal: the cost of a cd/dvd and your time to download and burn an ISO.

There's no spesial version of Fedora for a server,
so download the latest from the Fedora Project site:
The only thing I can add is that Fedora is mainly a desktop distro,
(with GUI and lots of apps), cause you can use it as a serverOS.
It's just not spesialy tailored for it.
There are others that are:
CentOS a RedHat-ish OS just without the RedHat branding:
If you want a RedHat/Fedora like server OS, or
Debian,
Ubuntu server edition,
SLES SuseLinuxEnterpriseServer ($$$)
just to name a few.

Often times there is little difference between a desktop version and a server version. For example, in Ubuntu the big difference is that the server edition doesn't default to supporting a GUI. It is easy enough to install one if you want, so it is no real big deal.

OpenSUSE == Fedora
SLES == RHEL == (pretty much) CentOS

Try using unetbootin, I found it useful in installing most Linux distros
