I'm trying to install IRIX 6.5.10 on a clean (new) disk in my O2 system, but when it tries to get the installation tools from local cdrom I get the message : swap partition(1) is not a valid swap area. Do I have to partition it manually and if so how do I do that ?

repartition the drive as a rootdrive using
>> boot -f dksc(0,6,8)sashARCS dksc(0,6,7)stand/fx.ARCS --x
(This example assumes that cdrom drive is on scsi controller 0, unit 6)
Then answer the questions about your harddrive

I've got a similar problem.
I have an Indigo 2 which I need to re-format and re-install IRIX 6.5. What commands would I use to do this?

Sorry if it's a dumb question. I'm very green when it comes to IRIX.

to format the indigo2 try this it worked for me,

>> boot -f dksc(0,3,8)sash64 dksc(0,3,7)stand/fx.64 --x

this is presupposing you have an Indigo 2 with 64 bit support..

i myself cant seem to get a system to boot on my purple indigo2 - r10k , i have low leveled the drive created a new filesystem then a nice fresh clean install of irix 6.5.2 , i get Boot File not Found on device: scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(8)/sash. Autoboot failed Unable to continue; press <enter> to return to menu

email me keeb@keeb.com with any help

Yeah that happened to me too. I have a Purple Indigo 2 too. I formmated, installed and then Autoboot failed. I don't know why it happens.

If you find out, can you let me know too. Thanks.

I have the same problem installing IRIX 6.4. Its a catch-22, the install program tries to boot from the new disk, but that disks needs a boot programs installed (the manual says sash). The manual says the copy sash to the drive using drvtools, but if you cannot boot up you can't use that tool???

Did you find a solution to this problem?

The same thing with Octane, this worked out: [thumbsup2]

boot -f dksc(1,4,8)sash64 dksc(1,4,7)stand/fx.64 --x

cd-rom is connected to external scsi port with id 4.

I have bought a hard disk model Ultrastar 73LZX 18.3 Gb. I tried to install the software after the disk repartition but this is impossible due to an error.

The error is (wich appear after the lunch of istallation from CD-ROM): swap partition (0) is not a valid swap area.

Have you any idea about how to solve the problem ?

Can you give me the right procedure to format, partition ed make usable the Hard Disk under the unix sistem.
My unix is an IRIX 5.3

Many thanks.

rutte, make sure at the command prompt that you do a resetenv. Do a hinv and note what the drive is labeled as...scsi(0)disk(1) etc.......Then do a setenv OSLoadFilename(not sure on the syntax) scsi(?)disk(?)rdisk(0)partition(8) so install knows where you swap is located.

Then install software and see if you get the error.

Good Luck!

I'm getting the same error as rutte, but I just was allowed the O2 system we had in storage, with Irix 6.3.
It WILL NOT accept the command, in any form that was posted above.
I can get into the sash: prompt, but it tells me
>> efs read error, bad count
I know it's a bit old, but can anyone help me out here?
