I am new to Domino/Notes, I am running Domino/Notes 5.04, I have noticed that they are currently up to version 5.08. I was wondering about the incremental installs, I find no where that explains how to perform them. Is there some place I can go (or book to purchase)that explains this process?

Is it necessary to perform this process?
I also have one mac client I downloaded Notes for mac ver 5.07 if I do not run in updates will this product still work for me.

The incremental update programs are pretty self-explanatory, but they do have documentation on the site ( especially when installation varies from normal. Assuming the Notes client is located in the typical directory on your hard drive x:/Lotus/Notes and the data directory is x:/Lotus/Notes/Data, you should be able to run the incrementals from anywhere. My tip to you is to rename them as you download so you know which is which. I typically use the format 505to506.exe, for example. When you run the application, it will first verify the file's integrity, then find your current version of Notes. Download them all (pay attention to client and platform) and then run each installer in order (i.e. 5.0.4->5.0.4a, 5.0.4a->5.0.5, etc.) and you're set.

As to the why of your question, there are hundreds of fixes between 5.0.4 and 5.0.8 ( by which they've addressed a number of bugs and performance or security issues. It's akin to Windows Updates: most are useful (some are detrimental), but your computer (or your client) won't stop working without them.

Hope this helps. "One fish, two fish,
