I want to install exchange server 2007
one as front end
and one as back end
so I install one access role
and the other is mail box rule and hub transprt server role.

and after the configuration I can not send email to external or even receive from external, and I can not telnet mail.domain.com 25 .
so I think I must install one as access role and hub transport server role
and the other one (backend)only as mail box role .
Is this right

yes that is the accepted way but either way won't make any difference until you create connectors.

The front-end and back-end architecture has changed in Exchange 2007. The front-end is now the Edge role, and the backend servers are typically the CAS, mailbox and hub transport server roles.

Once you have installed hub and mailbox roles, you will need to configure a receive connector to allow anonymous connections to access the server. Or you can configure the hub transport role to communicate with an Edge role server, and the Edge server will allow those connections.

thanks,
so I need to install Edge role server (AS Front End)
and CAS,Mailbox and Hub Transport server for backend . is this right .

You only need edge if you have no other box providing a similar role such as an IIS/SMTP box or an email appliance.
