Hi all,

I am having a problem installing DS Sniffer Pro Console 4.1 on my Windows XP Prof. I'm getting ODBC and Winlogon.exe is error, has anyone exprienced the same problem, and what is the solution for it.

Thanks

Hi, I've tried this too, and had the same problem. Unfortunately Console softare is only officialy supported for 98\NT\2k. The agent only supports NT!!

Currently there is no Version of sniffer pro or DSpro console that functions on win XP. As Alf said. 98/nt/2k only

And how long has XP been out in the market? Wow, NAI needs to get with the program.

I also ran into a problem with using my massive listing of Sniffer filters created in the 4.0.048 and 4.10.115. They won't work in the 4.2 version. Plus, the new SQL Slammer filter is not backwards compatible. I must say that is a mistake on NAI's part.

It doesn't shine a good light on NAI in a market that is cost conscious already.

to reply to tech2jzgte his message;

Sniffer Portable 4.7.5. is released some time ago and does support XP. For the distributed enviroment there is no solution yet.

I've heard that the next version of Sniffer Distributed Console will be supported on XP.

To install the console software in XP, all you have to do is go into the installation file's properties and go to the Compatibility Tab, and check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box and select Windows 95.

Installs like a charm after that.

Many thanks to my student in Denver, Pat, for this tip.

Sounds like he utilized a tap, with a tap you do not have to worry about spanning / mirroring ports. I utilize a Finisair, the TAP was pretty cheap to purchase, under $400....

Sorry to weigh on on this so late but I just found and joined this forum today. This may be a rehash of one previous response but is posted in a complete format as it was given to me. Disclaimer- I haven't tried this myself but was assured that it works.

Work around for SniffView Console v4.1 Release 2 for Windows XP

The Sniffer console won't install without a small change. The install file's properties will need to be changed before launching.

It’s important to note that the install file (Dspconsl.exe) needs to be on your local drive (not a CD) or the "Compatibility" options will not be available (grayed out), therefore copy all files from CD to local hard drive.

1. Open the properties of the install file by right clicking on the file name Dspconsl.exe.

2. Select the tab "Compatibility". Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows> 98 / Windows Me".

3. Select OK and launch the install program (Dspconsl.exe). You may encounter an error message, but continue the install anyway.

4. Reboot when it is done installing. Your console should work at this point.

Note that this is a work around and that SniffView Console will be officially supported for
Windows XP in the next Sniffer Distributed software version to be released in 2003.

Phaleon56: Ive tried that on several machines with no luck copied the entire CD to the harddrive and changed the compatibility on the webdist install and the actual setup in the console directory. each and every time I get ODBC error (winlogon.exe) is running do you wish to keep checking. no matter what I chose it repeats the error or finally quits the install. Ive tried this with 4.1r2 and 4.2 consoles and nothing goes. Ive tried this on 4 seperate machines. from a base install of XP to SP1 with IE6 SP1. im not sure what might be different but if you have anything else it would be appreciated as to how the install went on.

Thanks

Mike,

Email me at sniff4food@yahoo.com with contact info and I will walk you through the install.

Sniffer Distributed 4.3 Console is supported on XP. Sniffer Distributed 4.3.5 has XP support for both Ethernet / Gig Agents as well as Consoles.
Any chance you can upgrade to the latest / greatest software to avoid all these issues?
