Hello:

Can anyone give me step by step information on installing a new harddrive in my computer. I am wanting to replace my present drive with a larger 40 gig 7200 rpm drive. I have a 10 gig 5400 rpm drive now. What problems will I face? Will the instructions which come with the drive be enough to install the drive? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jerr Moore

If you are familliar with partitioning and formatting, then no problem.
Simply ensure the jumper on the back of the drive is set to 'master', assuming it is the only drive in the system, and swap connectors from one to the other. In fact, physically mounting it can be more troublesome!

Then run 'fdisk' from a startup floppy, partitioning as required, then format the partition(s), finally installing the O/S.

If you are unclear on this procedure, let us know and we'll guide you in detail. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Yes you need first to partitian the new drive, then to format and finally to setup windows onto it.
Make sure your floppy dive is set to first boot device in bios.
Use your windows boot floppy to get you to an "a" prompt
Type: fdisk
create primary dos partition (for single whole drive)
make active
yes to large disk support
enter don't name volume
at the flashing "a" prompt type: format c:/u
it will take 20-40mins to fomat
For windows 98/98SE put the Disk in the drive
If you want the setup files copying onto your hard drive at the "a" prompt Type:
c: press return
at flashing "c" prompt type: md win98 (return)
type:cd win98 (return)
With a single CDrom drive fitted
Type: copy e:win98 (return)
if this doesn't work replace the "e" for a "c"
All the cab files should now start copying
Finally type: setup
And Windows should start loading.
I may have a couple of things the wrong way around but I am reciting from memory. Martin Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.

Don't forget, you MUST restart after fdisk, before you launch format. Simply exit fdisk and press the restart button to do this. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

You give no indication of your operating system or how you want to deploy new drive (eg, do you want to copy current system as is to new drive or do you want to set up from scratch). NT/2K/XP are quite different to 9x/ME to install. The new drive will tell you how to set jumpers so its master/slave or cable select. It may also have utilities for formatting drive & copying old disk to new. Don't use the formatting utilities if you intend installing windows fresh (use tools that come with windows) - but if you want to transfer your current system to new drive, second utility may be useful. If you are copying files across, you'll need to set one drive as master and one as slave to do this.
If old one is not at least ATA66 speed, you'll need a new IDE cable for new one (which will be).

Thanks, hotfusion, paparazi and wolluf for your help. I am going to put Windows 98 on my machine. Most of my program software is for 98. My old drive runs 98. I have some of my programs saved on a zip disks which I do not have software. I plan to restore them to the new drive. I am hoping this will work.

I need to know how to wipe my current 2g hard disk clean and start over. I will be using Win98 with disk and I have a win 98 boot disk. If someone could give me step by step instructions I would appreciate it greatly. My system is a Digital P 166. It is running Win 98 right now, but somewhere there is a conflict and I cannot install a new internal modem. I have tried deleting the old modem info and drivers but nothing works on having the system recognizing the 56K modem over the 28.8K modem. It only wants to work on the old modem instructions. No matter what I do the old modem info remains. I do not have any data on the drive that I care to save and want to start over.

I am aware of FDISK, but not sure how to use it
Any help?

Thanks
