Installing 98 over ME?

I have a laptop with ME installed, and I want a clean install of 98. I do not have any of the original software that came with the (Toshiba) laptop, so am concerned about hardware drivers.

What would anyone suggest; I thought maybe installing 98 over the existing ME, then 98 would detect the hardware and use the exisitng drivers?

A problem is on the laptop i cannot access any control panel applets (error message says i do not have permissions) so do not know how to find out what hardware is in this laptop. (If i could, i would track down drivers, format and do a clean install)

thanks

Howdy,

Firstly, 98 will not install over ME, you can only upgrade not downgrade. To put 98 on you would need to format.

For the drivers issue you could use a piece of software such as Driver Wizard ( It requires registration if you want it to give you the drivers but you can find out what hardware you have without registering. You can, however, get a 30 day trial for free, without disclosing any credit card details or anything which will allow you to download the drivers straight from them. I've found them pretty good.

Also, don't know if this will help but it might be worth a look, might just solve your control panel problem

Hope this helps

You may run across a problem with Toshiba. They do not support some older operating systems with later laptops. So your choices may be limited to going later. Possibly NT or 2K.
Best shot is to see what they have available and make your choice based on the availability.

SniffingGeneral,

I also have a Toshiba laptop (Tecra 740CDT) with Windows ME, that I was thinking of reformatting and installing Windows 98 SE.

You should be able to get specific hardware info from Toshiba, at least the vendor and model number of all the components. The only thing that I had any trouble with was the video card, but a Google search solved that pretty easily.

There is a chance (though small) that ME drivers will work on 98

If you have a large enough hard drive, install Win 98 into a different directory. For example: C:\N\WINDOWS\..unless you're just looking for something to do. Afterward you can deleted Windows ME and reclaim the added space with Partition Magic 4 and up.

OK, i've gone ahead and installed 98, and all is good apart from the modem which is not detected. Under ME it was identified as a Lucen WDM Communication Device.

when I first install windows the modem is recognized and appears under device manager with the yellow problem icon. I have tried a number of different drivers, which either are no use at all or almost install, but fail with the message "Setup cannot load the installer (modem.cpl) for the WDM_Modem hardware being installed."

any ideas?

SniffingGeneral,

I don't know if they have a driver for your particular modem, but Toshiba's support site listed Windows 98 drivers for mine.
