Is it possible for me to install two nics inside a w2k server? One to handle data coming in and another to process the data going out?

Absolutely, 2 NIC's is typical, one is usually used to connect to the WAN and the other the LAN.

You concept isnt correct. Each NIC would process packets in or out. You can have one NIC used for your local network, and the 2nd NIC can act as the routing interface to another network, ISP or WAN.

If you get a NIC that has network interfaces build in, its quite possible to load balance between the two NICs as well, but that depends on the NIC vendor.

Good Luck.

yes two nics can be intalled on the same win2k server pc.

well if you are configuring a software firewall (example gauntlet firewall from network associates) then you need two nics, one which connects the outside world (untrusted) to your hub and the other connecting the inside (trusted) to your hub.

most officies which have internet connection use a firewall and the two nics come into picture.

Could configure NIC teaming is several different ways (yes, this requires third party drivers) For example, Compaq offers three variations of teaming: Fail on Fault, Adaptive Load Balanacing, and Cisco Fast EtherChannel.

You can also use one NIC for production network traffic and the other NIC for backup traffic. Joseph L. Poandl
