I'm a BE newbie and need some help installing it on a new Domain Controller / File Server.

We will shortly be replacing a Novell network with AD and have two domain controllers nearly built. One acts as DC and fileserver and the second is also a DC and a print server.

We have purchased the following products...

Backup Exec 11D with Continuous Protection
MS AD 11D Agent for Active Directory
AOFO Agent
Windows Agent (To backup second server)

The software will be installed on the fileserver DC to backup AD and the files. The agent will be used to backup a few files and the spool directory on the second server.

My first question is what type of account is required for the service to run. Should I create a new account in AD with Domain Admin rights and use this to run the software?

Will I need any other accounts / setup to get the active directory agent working?

Are there any best practices / tips to follow during the install?

All advice is much appreciated.

When I took over in nour Infrastructure Dept, the previous server admin did the same thing, usng the DC as the mdia server. I quickly found out that it was detrimental to performance of the entire ADS on our campus.
Once off the DC, the backup rates increased dramatically, and the performance of the DC went back to a good thruput.
As the need for servers expanded, as well as the need of backing up data, we decided to scrap that idea and set up individual BUExec media servers. I would suggest at least a single Quad core or 2 dual core processors, at least 2GB RAM, and for your B2D, at least 700GB. I'm running 3 ninstances of BUExec on 3 media servers to carry the load here.

Thanks for replying.

I can see what you're saying. I should clarify that we don't really intend to run this as a media server as such. This software will be installed mainly as stand-alone to allow backup of this server to a locally attached SCSI tape drive. We will be backing up a few hundred mb off of the second DC as well using the agent. We don't currently have dedicated media / backup servers.

This system has 4GB RAM, 2 x Quad Core CPUs
