Hello all.

I've been getting this error in Windows XP Pro when I try to install programs:

"The InstallShield Engine (iKernel) could not be launched. The RPC server in unavailable."

Is this a problem with InstallShield or with the RPC service? I can't install any of the programs I need now. Can anyone help me out?

PS: I recently installed SP2.

rawhunger,

RPC = Remote Procedure Call

It would appear that the program that you are attempting to install is attempting to excecute a "RPC" on a server that it can not contact. Are you connected to the internet when you try to do this? Have you tried to install other programs with the same results?

Try installing a program that you know you have installed previously without Inet connected.

Possibly post program name(s) you are having problems with.

Hi rvnguy,

The programs I was tried to install first was the Creative MediaSource from the SoundBlaster Audigy LS installation CD. Then I tried to install Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. Both use InstallShield and both gave that error when I tried to install them. I wasn't connected to the Internet.

I'll try to install something I installed before and see what happens.

I solved the problem!

The DCOM Service Process Launcher was disabled. I must have inadvertently turned it off when I was turning off other services. Starting it back up did the trick.

Thanks guys!

rawhunger,
Glad you solved your own problem. Always a risk to turn off services. If you are loading something you think you do not need or do not want it is safer/better to stop the loading vs having to diable services after a boot.
