after i did an upgrade of xp home with xp pro, when I tried to boot up, I get the following error and a empty desktop. heading says

"explorer.exe - entry point not found"

the error states "The procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll"

Does any one know of an easy fix for this? Or of anyone else having this problem?

I google'd this "xp procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous"

Most of the problems have to do with SP1, in some form or another.

My guess is that you had SP1 installed, and upgraded to non-SP1 Pro.

You should try first a repair re-installation of XP:
My own guess is that you may need to "slipstream" an XP version with SP1 patches applied, and then do another re-installation upgrade to XP to solve the problem.

But please see the Google links under "Groups" to see if there is any other advice that could help.

I was in the process of uprading when this happened. I get my regular background on the desk top, but don't have any icons

What Operating System is displaying on your desktop at the moment? Do you have any access to anything from it?

See if anything here applies.

307229 - Icons, Favorites, E-Mail Messages, and Customization Is Missing After Upgrade to Windows

"a computer preinstalled with an OEM version of XP Home might not upgrade using a retail version of XP Pro upgrade. This is especially true of laptop computers that have a customized OEM version of XP Home installed. In that case, only a clean install will work. Laptop computers require specialized hardware drivers not found in the conventional "retail, upgrade" version of Windows XP. It would have been best if you had initially called HP support and ordered HP's version of Windows XP Pro for your specific HP computer." - Carry FISH

Is it time for a clean install instead of an upgrade?
