Hello all,

I installed IE7 and, since then, I have not been able to logoff the users on my computer. After booting, I can log in, logoff, and login again (as any user). But, after that 2nd login, I can't logoff, restart, or shutdown. I have seen this problem reported on another forum too, but the only response was to uninstall IE7. I've tried that and it doesn't fix the problem. The only thing I can do right now is turn on Fast User Switching.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Do you get the same problem no matter what user you login with the first and then second time?

What happens when you try - is there any error message? Does event viewer list any errors?

Can you logoff from Task Manager?

Nothing happens. The logoff box pops up, like normal. I can hit the logoff button. But, nothing happens after that. It just goes back to Windows and you can continue working.

I cannot logoff, restart, or shut down from Task Manager.

I'm not sure that this is actually an IE problem, even though it has manifested itself with the installation of IE7. Try running the system file checker - open a command prompt & type sfc /scannow

I tried the sfc and the XML parser.

No luck. :(

Have you found any solution to this problem? I have EXACTLY the same problem. It started when I installed IE7 last November, but I was not sure it was IE7 since I had installed Acrobat Reader 8.0, Windows Media and TrendMicro 2007 about the same time. This week I did a clean install of Windows and tested for the log off problem after each application install. It is IE7 that caused my problem. As you stated uninstalling IE7 does not make the problem go away.

Nope, I still have no solution. I've just turned on fast user switching for now. If I need to Shut Down, I can do it from the Welcome Screen (when you "switch user", it takes you to the welcome screen). :S
