**i Posted here too because Xp wasnt getting any responds
Windows XP Home is the Os, with 512megs of Ram, SP1
The printer is HP psc 1315 series. Strangely enough the disk out of the box is from Compusa and it is a 1310 series disk.
As soon as you boot up, says found new hardware, tries to finalize and gets message there was a problem with your new hardware from the systray. Then message comes up "RPC server is unavailable.
-checked services and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) & RPC locater are running.
-Print spooler wasnt, started it even though set to automatic
-Went to setup printer from control panel, said action could not be completed. Went back to services and print spooler quit. Event log said it had terminated unexpectedly. In fact its terminating upon startup.
-There were 13 viruses, 394 instances of spyware/malware. Prior to that almost everything was coming up with error message that said the program had encounterd a problem. Those errors are gone.
-Uninstalled printer & rebooted, letting Windows find device, same error.
-Tried using system restore and went back 5 months way before issue. Same RPC error message, same conditions. Went back to current, virus free point.
-MSCONFIG on general tab was on selective startup, set to normal, still get error.
-In services tab related files to RPC are selected.
In startup group, selected everything, same error
-Related issue I beleive, mrtRate service failed, could not find specified file, according to Event Viewer & CD-RW drive gets e:/ incorrect function, i/o error when a blank disc is inserted & accessed to burn. Sees all other discs fine. Device Manager says its fine.
-So there it is in a nutshell

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have looked online in various places but the things it tells you to do I have so any help would be awesome. Thanks again.

I am researching this error for a technical article. It seems to happen after an installation of XP's Service Pack 2 with versions of Spoolss.dll and/or Spoolss.exe missing or corrupt. Most advice says to uninstall the printer, reinstall the service pack, and then reinstall the printer. One post says to uninstall and reinstall the printer BEFORE reinstalling SP2. There is also advice to set RPC startup to automatic:

Control Panel | Services | Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service | Startup | Automatic | Restart Windows | Check Startup.

Some software firewalls block RPC. If you have one, disable it and see if you can get the service to work.

I'd be grateful if people who try this tell me if it works.
