I'm trying to install Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 to a Windows server 2000 SP4. When I try to install the software I get the following error.

"The wizard was interrupted before Veritas backup exec 9.1 for windows server could completely installed."

The log had the following error message:

"Error failed to install MSDE 2000 bkupexec instance"

I'm installing from an original disk that Veritas mailed me and I can't get the thing to install. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Open up the msde_bkupexec.log in the C:\winnt directory.

Do a search on return value 3.

the couple of lines before it should tell you why it has failed, post it here if you can't find it on the veritas website and we will try and help.

The problem I encountered was that the MSDE 2000 was not getting installed. I contacted Veritas and they provided me with a guide that would help resolve the issue, but still didn't work. I ended up installing SQL Server 2000 Std. and had Backup Exec use that to store it's data so it didn't need to install MSDE 2000. That seemed to work. I tried installing the software on three different machines (Server 2003 & Server 2000) and I received the same problem. Installing SQL Server 2000 just for Veritas is a bit of overkill, but that was the only way I could get it to work.

The reason it failed was there was another install of SQL. Rename the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder and the install will work.

I tried to install BackUp Exec before I installed SQL Server. The SQL Server directory was not on my C drive during the installation. It was only after I couldn't get Backup Exec installed that I installed SQL Server and then the install worked.

Spook007, thanks alot I was having a very similiar problem and I renamed the directory you referred to and my install completed.
