When trying to install a program it gets part way through it and comes up with the error CRC Checking Failed, then gives a file name. I've tried it a few times and its a different filename each time.

Any ideas ?

is it the same program each time? if it is, is it the same cd? if so, it could well be that the cd is damaged in some way. Scotsdude[bravo]

Its only the one program but i have tried it with a few disks as i got new ones sent to me by the provider. They also suggested that it might be caused by a hardware problem but couldn't suggest what it may be.

It could very well be your CD-ROM drive. Do you know what brand it is? The CD that you are trying to read, is it a CD-R? If so, try to get a copy of it on another brand of CD-R. ie. Try one with a different color on the bottom. (gold, green, blue, etc.) If it's a pressed CD then you may want to try it on another computer with a different CD-ROM drive before buying a replacement one. CD-ROM drives are really cheap these days anyway.

Howdy:

Run a cleaner through your cd drive and then try the program cd again.

Thanks for the threads im going to try running a scan disk and see if that helps. But does this error coming up mean that the problem is on my computer or on the cd. I tried using it on someone elses computer and it went through fine. It only comes up while trying to install this one program so im a bit stumped really

The problem seems to be with your CD-ROM's ability to read the CD.

You can try the scan disk but it doesn't sound like a hard drive problem to me.

I talked to a few of they're IT people at the company and suggested doing the scan disk. They said this wouldn't make any difference because its happening while installing the program. Does anyone know if hardware in the computer can make this sort of error occour ?

Yes, your CD-ROM drive... I recently had problems with a brand new Sony drive when installing a program that was on a brand new pressed CD. When I tried the CD in another drive it installed just fine.

When you're having trouble reading a CD, logic would suggest your CD-ROM drive could be the culprit. It's defenitely the first thing I would rule out. If you don't have another CD-ROM try asking a friend to let you borrow one for 15 mins to test a problem that you're having.

You need to rule the CD-ROM drive out before checking out any other hardware.
