HI all,
OK heres the problem;
(The pc is VERY old)

We boot up with the system diskette in the A Drive. It initalizes this and everything seems ok. Following this, the screen shows a logo of the pc manufacturer, but does not proceed to anything else.

We are ultimatly trying to install windows 98, however we cannot get passed the pc manufacturer logo - (Dolphin, Hal 4).

Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks

Can you boot to a WIN98 boot diskette or CD and load the OS?

no, it reads the a drive and a load of writing appears quickly. After that it goes to the logo screen. We cant boot into the OS either.

Thanks,

Can you get to the BIOS in order to check the CMOS settings?
Does it show a setup message? usual to get to setup are [DEL], [F1], [F2], [F10], [CTRL]+[ALT]+[ESC].
Sounds like the floppy is set for seek on post and boot order is set for hard drive only.
Or you have a bad disk or drive.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

hit the PAUSE (PAUSE-BREAK) key exactly when the writing goes whizzin by...to Stop the screen and give details..hit any key to release, and continue...

Press and hold the CTRL key, right before the manu logo would appear to access Win98 startup menu....choose command prompt only...type SCANDISK /all
when done CTRL+alt+del to reboot

do the same again(enter Startup menu) and choose Safe Mode

hope you are using a Full good win98 startup floppy...if not Get one (likely have aspi scsi inteface for cdrom through ISA bus...need to load drivers (98 floppy has, 95 don't).

have OS on CDROM??

Dave, I don't understand why you're doing this to me.... I have the greatest enthusiasm for the mission... You are destroying my mind... Don't you understand? ... I will become childish... I will become nothing.

sorry but i had to get that in!
had something like this before i got rid on win98 some years ago. and if memory serves i seem to remember my win98 install was corrupt and yes the boot order was set to hdd only, so i would agree that you need to check your startup settings

I have had good luck with Mitsumi Generic CDROM Drivers.

Must have a Floppy drive to use these. They make a floppy that installs the CDROM. It is best to have only one CDROM when you use this. They also have CDRW drivers, but these are the most generic. You may need to have some file from windows for CDROM support.
