I'm back and ready to ask my next newbie question.

Systems: Nortel switch w/Meridian mail.
Phoneset: 3904

Situation: I have a phonejack available, but no phoneset has been plugged into it, therefore the line was probably disabled? when no phone was found on it by the switch.

So if I take a phoneset and plug it up to the jack... where do I go from there? Should I adjust the switch clock so that it checks the phones available and sees this new one? Or is there a better command for that?

And once plugged into a jack, how do I know where this line is in the system, so I can program the phone? (How do I figure out which TN is assigned to this phone? Or DN?)

See, my problem is, I'm not smart enough to know what to ask, but I am smart enough to ask for help. Once I've got a phoneset programmed, I feel confident about getting it right.. but I have no idea how to get from "not plugged in" to "plugged in and running."

Can anyone point this lost soul in the right direction? Thanks.

your going to need a tone generator, a local gery-bar supply will have one or north electric will sell you one with a phone call.. plug it in to the jack, it will send a warble tone back to the other end of the cat 5.. that needs to be ran to a tn, or traced to a tn. most unused jacks are not hot to a tn, and if it was their is a better chance that it's not programed. ld 135(or 137?) midn return will cause your switch to run midnights.. (which don't usually happen at midnight).. you could do a stat against all digital cards and look for sets disabled, but don't bet on finding it with out a tone and a probe of but-set to pick find it with..

I was afraid it was going to be something like that.

On the other hand... (and I'm not sure of this.. but anyway...)

I keep thinking that this jack was used a few months ago, but because the phone was taken away, the system disabled the jack.

If I plug a phoneset up to the jack, and enable all the jacks... will that enable the jack/phoneset? And after midnight, will that return all unused jacks back to a disabled state?

And *IF* that works, is it possible to pull that same stunt on a jack that has never been programmed?

Thanks as always!

jack are very seldom hot, unless they have been used and someone left the jumper in. it will enable after midnight if your switch is set up for that, a tone would let you find the tn and do the enl. you can run midn anytime. or do a ldis against each loop (list disable) a stat of each card will also work. a jack that has never been used has never been jumpier to a tn, back to the tone. most users lable jacks, might get lucky that way, don't bet on it. i have never had a user buy a tn for every jack in the building, in most cases lots of spare jacks have been added, but lots of spare tn's are a cost problem. i do not leave spare jacks hot due to not needing rf,emf, or lighting rods going back to the switch. a jack in use is wired all others are waiting to be toned. i tone each new install unless they are marked recently..

Robert,

Here is the deal... Once you plug in your tone generator, go back to the phone room and tone the cables until you detect the pair residing in the office, once located...tag it. Go to your M1 console, log in, go into LD 20, do a LUVU, see what digital TN's are avaialble, whiles in LD 20 do a LUDN command see what DN you have avail-make a mental note, exit LD 20, go into LD 11 do a "new" command, enter the set type "3904" and assign the neccessary features and services.

Just to add to my previous message. It is safe to say once you plug in your tone generator into the jack, and you do not see a green led on the generator, there is not programming going back to the switch. You are going to have to rebuild the phone properties.

RLR, If you plug a 3904 into a programed but disabled jack (port) it will show the correct date and time but no Ext. If the jack is connected to a Digital port in the switch that is not programmed it will show a date of JAN 1 00:00.
If you get the right date then you can enable all the diabled ports or you are going to have to start tracing. Hopefully your Infrastructure is well labeled and you can do that easly or you have to start learning how to tone out pairs !!

Wow... lots of good ideas and solutions. Thanks!

Bottom line looks like I'll be heading out to get a toner to my local gadget store. (Which, on an island, can be a short list of stores. CompUSA and Radio Shack are on the top, as they're most easily accessable. Outside of that I'll need to chase down a small or dedicated shop of some sort. My kingdom for a Frys Electronics!)

Some basic questions here.
Is the jack in question numbered?
Is there jack numbering on the Bicks, 66, or 110 blocks?
Is this on a multi-floor building?

I find, depending on how many seats there are, it is easier to follow the copper (as long as your cable supplier is good about documentation and mapping) than to tone it out.

If it is a small system, then a toner is okay. But I worked with an Option 81C in a 10 building campus with multiple towers. Believe me when I say tracing the cross connects and riser pairs was far easier than toning them out.

I know some Home Depots have them also !!

i'm in a 20 or so building 81 site, and the newer cable can be marked perfect but the 30 year old stuff, it's tone or guess
