I've been able to install the ePO 3.5 console on Windows XP without a problem, however it didn't work for me because 3.5 requires that you be on a domain to run the console remotely. The 3.0 console works without a domain if I remember correctly. Anyway, I've never actually tried to install any 3.0 on XP. I read in the ePO documentation that McAfee does not support installing the console on XP, so if you do attempt it, you're on your own. You may want to see if you can install the 3.0.2a console, although I'm not sure a 3.0.2 console will connect to a 3.0.1 server.
I just installed the 3.0.1 console on XP SP2 with absolutely no problems. I know this sounds dumb but make sure you're just installing the Console and not the Server too.
The only problem I've ever had with a remote ePO console on XP is visibility back to the ePO server. In the case where I haven't been able to log in to the ePO server, an entry into the hosts or LMhosts file has done the trick. If your remote console machine is not a member of a domain or the ePO server exists outside of a domain, then you could experience problems getting the console and server to connect to each other. Also, depending on the IP port that was used to provide the remote console connectivity, the XP SP2 firewall can be an issue, but this should be a fairly obvious fix.
