Installation Error - QuickTime 2

Got the same problem, have searched the iTunes/Quicktime site for info and can't get anywhere. The additional problem for me is that i want to transfer my iTunes library from my old pc to my new laptop, which itunes won't allow me to do unless i have the later version of quicktime player installed.

I spent almost 8 hours trying to get Quicktime installed. I finally came to the point that I was either going to reformat if I couldn't get it to go. So I went to the registry and deleted every mention of the word 'quicktime', and that did the trick. I can't promise success to anyone else, because the registry can be a dangerous place to delete things, but it worked for me.

by deleting everything in registry, do u mean u simply searched the word "quicktime" and deleted everything u saw?

i have deleted everything but one thing in Adobe which cant be deleted. i get 3 different errors during installation.
1)"Setup could not ifnd a file on the specified path or disk.
Please check that the proper disk is inserted or specify a
new path. Retry or Cancel." I click retry.
2)"Error 1714. The older version of QuickTime cannot be
removed. Contact you techincal support group. OK" I click.
3)"Error:-1603 Fatal error during installation.

I received the same error message (QuickTime Installation failed Error Code 3). I was able to install successfully Quicktime 7.03 -- separately from iTunes -- by downloading the installer available at
The Quicktime player works fine and iTunes appears to be working. (I don't use iTunes, but it did start w/o any error message.) W/ this work-around you'll be running QT 7.03 instead of the newest release 7.04, but I doubt that should cause anyone much tsurris.

I have to say my faith in Apple products is rapidly fading. Perhaps Mr Jobs should spend less time with his iPod and create software which can be correctly and completely uninstalled - this isn't rocket science, so it's just slapdash not to make this possible.
That said, I use "Your Uninstaller" to make sure these lazy programmers don't leave their droppings all over my machine.

Go to your start menu and click on "Run". A small box will open with one line to type in a word, type in the word regedit and click ok. Your registry editor will appear. Click on "edit" then "find", and a new small box will appear. In this box type the word quicktime, or what ever you want to get rid of. It will search you registry and list every entry that has the word quicktime it it. I deleted every entry that had the word quicktime in it and then it installed for me. Good luck.

Also check through the windows explorer to make sure that you have deleted all the quicktime files.
I've had a similar problem. I've used Karen's Registry Ripper, Regcleaner and CCleaner, as well as going manually through the registry with regedit, and deleting all references to Apple (being careful to avoid applets) and to QuickTime and to Quick Time. Nothing works, despite taking my life into my hands this way. I did manage to install Quick Time Alternative, which enables iTunes to work (it's actually by Apple, despite what you might imagine).
I suspect it has as much, or more, to do with Installshield as it has to do with Apple Quicktime. And I did pursue that avenue for a while, fruitlessly - but I've given up now.
Unless there is some guru out there who knows exactly what is happening?

If you’re trying to install iTunes on Windows and it fails during the Quicktime installation with a “-3? error, or you try to install Quicktime 7.0.3 on Windows and you get an Error 1714 or some complaint about not being able to find quicktime.msi even though it’s there, the way to fix it is to:
*Start/Run regedit
*Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT –> Installer and select Products
*Use the Edit/Find menu to find quicktime inside that part of the key
*Delete the whole branch of the tree just ahead of the key where you found quicktime.msi
NOTE: I first tried deleting just the key with quicktime.msi and got the same errors so you have to delete the whole branch ahead of the key that contains quicktime.msi. I can’t remember the name of the folder but there was about 3 sub keys in it that got deleted in the process.
IT WORKS !! You should now be able to install Quicktime and iTunes without incident.

No - it doesn't work for me - because my computer is completely clean of Quicktime -including quicktime.msi in that location. In fact I deduce that Apple have modified their installation program slightly, in that I am no longer getting those 2 (1714 and 1603) pesky numbered error messages - now I am getting an unnumbered error message - saying the older version of QuickTime could not be uninstalled. I guess you could call that an improvement - but not much!!
Of course - it could be that the enigmatic non-specific references in Windows Install Cleanup do in fact refer to QuickTime components - but I'm not prepared to take the risk.
Does anyone else have any bright ideas? (And, by the way, I've already reinstalled the appropriate Installshield engine and Installshield msi thingy, referenced on the Installshield site, also to no avail)
