Ok, I have Duron 750 system with an ABIT KT-7A board, 128MB of RAM, and an IBM Deskstar 20 gig hard drive. I have tried installing WIn2K on this thing about 25 times, and I keep getting errors saying it cannot read from the CD. I have tried 2 different OS discs, 2 CD-ROM drives, and even tried cleaning both the CD's and the drives, does anyone have a clue why I cannot get this to work?

Slave the CDROM off of the hard drive and try again. If it goes then the IDE port OR cable could be bad. If it still errors out then it could be issues with the PRocessor or RAM. First try slaving it off of the Hard drive and let us know what happens. James Collins

I have also tried different partition sizes. Every once in a while I will get a BSOD in the middle of the install, but nothing is consistent! Not even the files it cannot read, I am totally at a loss here.

I had a similar problem 2 months ago ,but I was reinstalling my w2k always saying it cannot read a file from the CD, I cancel reinstalling backup some important
files and format my drive after that Install was perfect
no problem anymore, maybe it's not like your problem,
but, in my case was not a hardware problem

Are you using a burned copy of Windows2000? There are issues with Adaptec and the way the files are stored on the disc. Also, are you using a Dell CD for the install? There are a lot of computer manufacturers that provide Windows2000 installation disks that will only work on their systems.

..just a thought. Please let Tek-Tips members know their posts were helpful. Thanks!

I am using a Government Enterprise Licensed copy of Win2K, it came direct form Microsoft. Only diff is, that you do not need a license key to get it going, but the CD is an original, no doubt. I tried the slave thing, and it did boot from CD when I did that, but still had the file problems with both my original CD and an upgrade copy I had at home. I am betting this darn HD is bad. I thought that by buying a DeskStar, I was avoiding trouble like this... sux to be me I guess.

Before you give up - copy the entire contents of the CD-ROM to a "Win2K" folder on a different partition on your hard drive, and run setup from there. This will bypass any CD-ROM related issues, and will be a lot faster if it works. I have all my MS OS's copied to folders on my second hard drive, so i never need any CD's when windows asks for them or anything.

Just boot to a Win98 floppy, switch to D: (or whatever drive it's on), switch to the Win2K folder, and type "setup". See if it fails there..

I tried that too.... it says "This cannot be run from DOS mode"

My bad - i was thinking of Win98.
:\ it's been a long day..
Switch to the Win2K\i386 directory, and run "winnt" instead.
