Install Problem with AIX 4.3.3 ("c31" LED)

Hi,

I've a big problem with installing AIX 4.3.3 on a RS/6000 7043 43P 140 Model. I've put keyboard,mouse,monitor etc. direct to the machine. After the Install CD begins to boot, the screen changed to a dark-grey one, and something like light-green cursor is at the top-left on the screen. The Status LED at the machine shows c31.

I've tried an installation with an ASCII Terminal (Serial connection). After installing the BASE-System, I have retried to boot up the maschine... I got the same dark-grey screen with the light-green cursor...

Can someone help me ?

If I boot with the ASCII Console the system hangs after following tasks...

How can I solve this prob ??

Hi

Did you put the switch mode in Service or Normal? Dunno about 43P 140 Model.

Basically if the error is C31 means:

C31- Select the Console display for the diagnostics. To select no console display, set the key mode switch to Normal then to Service. The diagnostics programs will then load and run the diagnostics automatically.

While starting the installation. you have to select the console.

Theres no key to switch the modes. If I press F5 during the icons display, the machine switch to service mode and booting from CD-Rom automatically. If I boot in "Normal" mode, its the same problem .
I have use the Diagnostic-CD to check the hardware etc...
all OK and no errors!
There's a GXT 250/255 in the machine, could this be a problem? And I use a normal PC-Monitor (21" Eizo T960).

I've read so many board entries and problem solve docu's.. hrhr .. I hope, that anyone can help me

Hi,

To me it looks like your AIX set is missing the driver for this specific display.
Or - there is a hardware problem with a graphic adapter.

I can't login, coz I get no login prompt etc.
And at this point, there is no error-code etc. in the status display.

The problem is that the serial cable on your console is not sending the DTR correctly. This is not a problem in maintenance mode (as you found during the install) but is a problem in normal operations. Your options are:
a) Get a proper serial connection.
b) Boot into maintence mode and set up the tty for the console to have clocal added to logtime & runtime attributes.
c) Found out why the graphical console isn't working and fix it.

Ok, i will try to build a better serial cable.. I believe, that the cable I used has no DTR connection.

c31 is not an error code. It is waiting for input from the keyboard.

rockford - You are making your own serial cable? You should be able to buy a null-modem cable from any decent electronics store. Be aware that AIX is picky and you will need a 'perfect' null-modem cable.
