I'm attempting to install Adobe Reader v.8.xx on a friends system. Software refuses to install because 'you don't have sufficient provileges to install this software for all users'. This is an odd msg since I am logged in as an "Administrator". Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Maybe there are Permission problems in the Registry or in Windows files, even though you are installing as an Administrator, if you're being denied access to certain key install areas because of faulty access permissions or even Group Policy settings, or other things like security programs (i.e. AntiVirus software), then your install will fail.

Try disabling your security software, try another user such as the built-in Administrator.

Is there any logging provided by Adobe?

For troubleshooting, enable the MsiInstaller verbose log file using the instructions from KB article Q223300.

You could also try installing the software via Add or Remove Programs/Add New Programs to see if you get the same result?

Thanks for the suggestions, but so far no success.

Setting the registry as suggested did not create a log. Probably because the installation never starts; Adobe must check privileges first and aborts immediately.

Add/Remove wants a floppy/cd or windows updates to install from. I force it to allow me to use a drive (when it can't find installable software in the above) but have the same results.

Any other suggestions?

Also, there is no logging by Adobe. All is done in the temp file and I can't find anything there that helps me.

Can you install other .msi files without a problem?

What have you got by the way of errors in the Event Viewer?

The event viewer shows the error code 1013, which is undefined in the MS knowledgebase. I have found a slew of problems listed on the Adobe forum, but not this specific error.

Are you updating an older version of Adobe, have you tried uninstalling any older version then installing the latest version?

Example: - "Acrobat 6.0 Standard" MSI has this in logic preventing any repairs or self-repairs if logged in as a user under NT, Windows 2000 or XP resulting in message/event-description "You do not have sufficient privileges to run this installer."

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Linney, thanks again for your assistance.

I uninstalled Adobe 7.09 and use CC to clean up any residual files. After rebooting I tried to install 8.12 unsuccessfully

Re: > This deals with eventid 1000; ours is 1300 / The installer is an exe file not an MSI.. and is unchangeable.

SoftGrid Virtual Application Server: "Access is denied" does not seem to apply here.

MS Cleanup utility applies to .MSI installations.

I appreciate your help, however, this is taking up too much time. I've installed an update for Foxit, and hope that will enable proper copying from a new Adobe pdf. I'll find out this evening. If not we will wait until Foxit catches up or Adobe fixes installer.

Thanks
AGM

AdbeRdr812_en_US.msi is the installer that I have for Adobe reader, maybe you would have better luck with a .msi file?

You should find such an installer on any XP (or Vista) machine running Adobe reader (latest version) in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Setup Files\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A81200000003}\AdbeRdr812_en_US.msi

Or you could just download the .msi file from Adobe rather than taking the .exe file option?.

Linney, I resolved the problem by updating Foxit to a new release. I prefer to use Foxit, it's much lighter weight.

BTW, I wasn't able to find the .msi; the pointers at the adobe sight take me to: AdbeRdr812_en_US.exe.

I appreciate your effort; my friend is now happily cutting and pasting (with permission) from a popular church bulletin for publication in her church's bulletin.

I'm glad you have solved it, one way or the other. In the sake of completeness, I just want to add this comment.

If you right-click on the files downloaded from another computer or Internet, you often see in the Properties of the downloaded file a check box to "Unblock" access to the file.
