Install OSR5 with tape : how? 1

Hello,

I want to install SCO OpenServer 5.0.4. I try with CDRom (see my previous post : thread58-718658 )
But i think the media is broken...
But i've got 3 tape : /dev/u /dev/root and /dev/boot
It's the first time I use tape and OSR.
The problem is : How can I reinstall the OS with these tapes?
What is the goot defbootstr to boor from tape?

P.S. : I try to put the tape /dev/boot/ into the driver tape but it's write : error no boot disk...

I can read and copy files from my CD
I've got 1001 files in /OPT/ARCHIVES
and my cd is a not an original (so the files can be bad that why I 've made sum -s VOL*) and my drive is good

so :-(

Those "sums" are the correct 16 bit checksums.....
Some alternative boot strings.....

This is only a bootstring problem or diskette boot problem?

Many information appear on my screen, apprently no problem! What do I have to look especially?
So I have to insert the btld disk and the same problem appear : error opening VOL.000.000

Just out of curiosity, your cd-rom is IDE isn't it? Is it a read/write drive or just a standard read only? You should physically check the cd to make sure there aren't any bad scratches or fingerprints (some drives have more of a problem with this than others). I recommend you try a using different cd-rom drive in the sco box.

i have had experienced this problem of not opening VOL.000.000 and in my case after trying on three systrems i succeded on changing the CD i,e a case of bad CD

The drive is IDE, it's just read CDROM drive. I will try the media (have you got a tool for?)
And finally I will put another cdrom drive in the sco box.

I've changed my cdrom drive : the same problem.
I use a cdrom analyser tools and the media is ok!

I've got a idea, if I install a different OS like Linux/UNIX then, I'll be able to read my tape (backups) so I can : make emergency diskette????Or what can I do?

P.S. : it's the first time I have backup on tapes so it's new and i don't know how use it !

After some reflection, and subject to correction:
If you have a boot disk (installation boot disk) and a CD and a BTLD as you have said, the installation is as described in the link given by Stan.
But I'm not sure that you have a BTLd. They have files on the disk named by the driver and if I recall correctly a space.o file.
The installation boot disk, when accessed by the tools boot, asks for the CD location. If you change the location to where your CD is actually located you should start loading from it.

Is the cdrom drive set as the primary master or cable select?

I'm sure that I have the btld disquette (made by the compaq Pack).
The cdrom drive is set as primary master.
I'm not sure to understand :

When I try to type tool on the boot prompt : it's the same problem !

and the line should be :

tools link=ciss

This is using the info you had in an earlier post. I don't know the btld name and assume you do.

Should start up the installation and reach the point where it asks to insert the btld
loads driver.o.txt
driver.o.data
space.o
asks for the boot again to load some more of the ramdisk
asks for the btld again (but dowsn't use it yet)
asks for the location of the CD

Any error messages up to this point indicate you have a defective install boot disk or defective btld, or possibly the wrong btld.

The boot sequences I quote were from an installation start that I did on one of my machines, but exited out before it started tranferring files.

No thinking involved. That is the install procedure.

The only problems I can see have to do with the btld drivers and the raid configuration. Neither of which are a SCO problem. And if the CD is defective, that isn't a SCO problem either.

->Yes maybe a RAID/ciss problem , but I've made the btld diskette via the compaq Pack (5.40) : i will download newer version

I'm back! So Edfair, I 've try what you say and :
-> The same error (error opening) AND its says warning : ciss (slot 0) event notifier disabled
ciss (slot 1) event notifier disabled

Stanhubble, cdrom drive is set as primary master

Now, i will try to find the newst version of btld, ciss driver and wd driver;

I've got the latest btld diskette and nothing new!
To verify that I've a good cdrom (media), if I tell you the MD5 of the CD. If we have the same md5, we are sure that my cdrom media is good?

This appears to be something related to specific hardware/driver issues. I don't have anything that resembles the hardware so I can't give any further guidance.
