Hi everyone,

I am having trouble installing oracle 8i on solaris 8. Everytime I run ./runInstaller, I will get the error msg "Can't connect to X11 window server using 'xx.xx.xx.xx:0.0" as the value of the DISPLAY variable"

I had exported the DISPLAY and ran xhost before running the installation. What I suspect is that I do not have X windows installed. My SPARC5 does not have a graphics card installed in it.

Is it possible to install Oracle8i on Solaris 8 without X windows or graphics card?

Thanks in advance!

According to the Oracle Universal Installer Guide "An installation can be run from a console (non-X-Window system or a telnet/dial up session) as long as the target system has X started."

You shouldn't need to have a graphics card in the system you are installing Oracle on. I do this all the time. As long as you can export the display to another system you have access to you should be all set. Be sure you run xhost on the system you will be exporting the display to.

Thanks draggle. This is a stupid question, how do you start X on the target system?

You may start XServer elswhere and then export DISPLAY variable. I successfully installed Oracle from Linux console (or to be presize via telnet) while running (and getting output from) XWin-Pro on NT :). Regards, Dima

Hi Dima,

Could you show me on how to install it on Solaris via telnet while running and getting output from XWin-Pro on NT?

Thanks!

Start XServer on your NT box (nthost)
Connect to Solaris by telnet

DISPLAY=nthost:0.0; export DISPLAY
./runInstaller

The error means that XServer specified by DISPLAY variable is not accessible, so it's up to you to either CHANGE THIS VARIABLE to point to the correct location or TO LAUNCH XServer.
Regards, Dima

Hi Dima,

As you know, I am a total beginner in this, thus I need more detailed explanation.

Start XServer on your NT box (nthost)
Question: where and how to execute this?

Connect to Solaris by telnet

DISPLAY=nthost:0.0; export DISPLAY
Question: is this the exact commmand? Are you referring nthost as the IP address of the NT machine?

./runInstaller

The error means that XServer specified by DISPLAY variable is not accessible, so it's up to you to either CHANGE THIS VARIABLE to point to the correct location or TO LAUNCH XServer.

Sorry for being a complete fool and please bear with my ignorance. Thanks!

XServer is a program, not a part of NT. And it may be not free ( though I suppose you may find some free implementations for your platform). Thus I can not explain neither how to run it nor how to install it.

XServer is installed on most linux/unix machines, so you may rut it there.

nthost should be replaced by IP or name of the box (NT, Linux, Unix ...) where you run XServer. All the graphical output will be displayed there.
Regards, Dima

Yes

I believe that you do have to set either in a telnet session or in a variables statement.

DISPLAY=nthost:0.0; export DISPLAY
./runInstaller

This is on of the better install docs I have seen on the web.

I was able to get through the install but was never able to get Apache to work. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you start it manually? Do you have another web server installed and running? Regards, Dima

Install Xvision on your NT box, or better install Linux !!! Too bad I.T. is not cash business

I'm sure most of you are aware of this but telnet (like ftp) is a completely INsecure protocol (totally unencrypted, including passwords) so using it to build or administer a production Oracle box is a profoundly BAD idea.

get youself a copy of SuSE 8 (Linux) and use ssh/scp instead of telnet/ftp (ssh -X oracle@<hostname/IP> & you're ready to run OUI). if you HAVE to administer Oracle from a M$ box at LEAST download PuTTY & pscp so you aren't broadcasting passwords in clear text...
