Install older software on Windows XP SP2

I have software developed with Borland C++ Builder Pro version 4.00 32 bit which uses the Paradox Database.
This software is dated about 2000 just before XP release.

The installation is done with InstallShield.

The PKUNZIP 16 bit program is also installed with the package for the users convenience as it is needed to unzip some files the program uses.

I have been able to install the program and the Paradox Database and the PKUNZIP.exe with the Installer on Windows XP, Windows XP SP1.

Trouble comes when trying to install it on Windows XP SP2.

We have had to take the computer to a tech shop to have settings done to make this type of Program installable on XP SP2.

Since then we are able to install several different apps made with this software just like we used to before SP2 by double clicking the setup.exe file.

Techs are not always available in some places the software is used so I need to understand how to go about setting the XP SP2 to accept the programs.

What I would like to know is what settings are needed to be done to the XP SP2 platform to allow this older style software to be installed?

Any help would be appreciated!

Is the problem with C++ or Paradox? I seem to remember something about a problem with PDOXUSER.dll or exe or something and Paradox. There was a conflict with that file but I can't find my notes right now.

It happened to me a year or so ago and I dont remember actually.

However other users have the problem also.

As far as I can remember it is to do with the fact that XP SP2 suspects the files are NOT 32 bit and says prog is not compatible.

This could be because C++Builder 4 Pro used maybe a 16bit InstallShield?

or It could have been that the PKUNZIP file was causing the problem because it is a 16 bit dos app.

I know the problem you mention, PDOXUSER, as it is a problem with VISTA and I have come up against it before and it is mentioned here in this forum how to deal with the VISTA Paradox problem.

Sorry that I cant give any more info at the moment, but if necessary will have to reformat a disc and start from scratch to get all the messages.

I know a lot of people had to take their computer to tech shop to get settings changed with SP2 to install this app and since it has been changed they are able to install any of the CBuilder apps the same as normall.

There probably is a setting somewhere in the Registry that allows all apps if not XP to be automatically installed as WIN_95 compatible and is probably how the techs make the change. Only guessing?

Thank you for help.

If you could give us a few more details, such as what the error is and if possible, what file is throwing it and we may be able to help further!

It is a fair time ago since I had that problem installing on SP2 and dont remember the error messages. I will have to do a new Hard Drive and reinstall to get the messages to post them here...

Others who have had problems were sent to tech shops to get it done in the past.

The main reason I was asking..............>

I have a friend who has just bought a new computer with SP3 on it. I was expecting more problems with SP3 than SP2.

However, his installation went smooth without a wrinkle. Amazing... MS must have made more allowance for older software to be installed.

Thank you for your assistance.
