Upon the recommendation of our VPN vendor, I want to install the WINS service on my NT4.0 PDC. I'm having trouble with the install.
I have my NT4.0 Server CD, and it is in the d: drive. I am logged in as the system administrator.
I go to the control panel and select Network, then click on the Services tab, then click 'Add' to add the service, then choose WINS from the list. I then get a 'non-critical error'. It says an error has occured, unable to open file d:\WINS.exe. If I choose to ignore, other following files get the same message: d:/WINSADMN.CNT, d:\WINSADMN.EXE, d:\WINSADMN.HLP, d:\WINSCTRS.DLL, d:\WINSEVNT.DLL, d:\WINSMIB.DLL, etc. When we're done erroring out, the 'installation' appears to complete, and the WINS service is listed on my machine. I now have the folder C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\WINS, but it is empty. When I reboot the machine, the WINS service tries to start but fails - no surprise, the event log shows that the file WINS.EXE was not found.
Any ideas why this is failing? Please don't tell me the media is bad...
Thanks,
L.
