Scratching my head-tryin to install network card on HP PAVillion 8543C, ATI Xpert128 video card in PCI-1, SOundblaster PCI512card in slot3.(stock card-rockwell combo modem/soundcard removed) *When I insert network card in open slot2 , system refuses to boot OS>freezes at the Windows98 start screen and will only restart in safe mode.Whats going on here? Pull out network card-boots normally. Any input appreciated..its over my head! TonyH

It is likely that you have a hardware conflict.

Pull out the SoundBlaster Card and leave the Network Card in - Does it boot?

If it does can you put the combo card nback in and try the same?

Try to borrow a Network Card from someone and see if you can install that one instead, if so replace yours with the same sort.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards. Running a PC without backups is like driving a car without a seatbealt. Your knack'ed when you crash!

Win98user--prob u are right. I will try the swapout. Idont know whether I should officially "remove the soundcard"using the device manager or not though. Guess I'll see whathappens. I know looking at the networking thing--it still lists this new network card, even though i pulled it out, and it isnt shown in the device manager. I'll post again with results. thks Tony

Yes, take all references of the kit you are removing out of your system settings and network settings.

If you have to put them back windows will probably just re-install them automatically - But just make sure you have the drivers to hand just incase.

Ok, curious turn of events. Took out soundcard -slot3, rebooted-no video,no boot. Tookout soundcard, replaced network card in slot2, also tried in slot3 -no video-no boot.(Seems, after pulling out hair,I bumped/loosened vido card, after rechecking it was seated properly-win98 boots again.) Back to square one now-will try reinstalling network card later today, to see if the loose video card was culprit all along. Beginning to smell a rat in PCIslot 2 though. thks for your help . . TonyH

OK-figured out the first half of it now, the network card is in, it is detected, and drivers installed. PCI slot 2~!
For some reason, even when it felt like it was seated-it wasnt,so no connection. Better flashlight revealed it was not all the way in the slot, so once again, something simple fooled the simpleton. lol Now-the monumental task-connecting/configuring this thing with the Hughes Direcway Satellite dish/software. hmmmm. THanks for the pointers !
