I'm using IPCOP distribution on my old computer as a firewall for my home computers but I'd also need to install a windows partition (during instalation ipcop, same as smoothwall express, erases all the partitions on the hard drive). I wouldn't mind using boot manager like Powerquest Bootmagic but after I resize the linux partition and install win 2000 on an active partition I can't start either one of the systems.
Could anybody give a hint about this situation???

P.S.: I'm a newbie in Linux world -this might be the reason ... :)

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Thanks for your attitude!

I think you need to reinstall lilo or grub.. (which one is used by IOCOP?)

for both, start the PC with the linux CD as "rescue", chroot to the linux partition and run either "lilo" or "grub-install /dev/hdXY"

Cheers.

Almost all linux distro's ive seen allow you to set partition options. You shouldnt have to blow away your entire harddrive just to install linux. Mabye you should look into a different distro, such as Fedora or Mandriva.

Whenever i have set up a dual boot system, i have always installed windows first, leaving an unpartitioned section of harddrive, and then I come back and install linux on that and use the linux boot manager(grub/lilo).

Have you thought about VMWare..... ???
I have successfully networked my Redhat image which runs on top of my XP Pro. box (through DHCP)and it operates like a fully functional server !

Saves you the bother of partitioning etc....

1. vmware has to use some resources, more than my machine has.
2. host and guest share the same phisycal connection that's not safe...
this is an old post and i have done a lot of progress from then: i have a laptop firewall with ipcop and win2k selected by bootmagic and on my other (more powerfull) machine i use win xp with a vmware vitual machine and only the vitual one has access to the internet so i feel fully protected.
