Install HD IBM ThinkPad 600E

I just installed a new HD in a ThinkPad 600E.
Bought used, no Diskettes for Boot or Utility.
1) How do I get past the built-in IBM Diagnostics, to get the HD recognized and Formatted?
Do I need a Utility, or is there a way to get around it?

I have not been able to find the answer on HD limits; does anyone know if there is a HD size limit for this ThinkPad?

The 600E never came with s HDD bigger than 10GB. It is possible that it doesn't support anything over 10GB.

Is it going streight into diags when you turn the unit on? If so, it believes there is a problem somewhere. Is it returning an error code?
