Hi All,

How do I set windows 2000 server so that I can install programs from an account other than an administrator account. Also, how do I designate a user as a "Power User"

Aloha,

James

don't you have an "users and passwords" icon i control panel?

I'm using Active Directory. I know how to setup users and groups. I just don't know how to set it up (rights?? policies??) so that I can install programs with accounts other than those designated as part of the Administrators group.

Thanks,

James

Thegrey is on the right track. You will need to give the user permission on the local PC. It is unwise to add users to administrator or domain admins group for the domain, this would give permissions for the domain. When software is installed on a workstation the setup program needs to edit the registry. Without being logged in with proper permission the setup will fail. Power user will probably work unless the software needs to edit the registry while it is running. Administrator will obviously give complete control over the entire workstation.

Open Control Panel on each workstation, (you must be logged on with admin permissions) open the users and passwords icon choose to add, browse your domain, select user, choose ok, select other administrator to grant full access to that local PC (including format)

When you install the program as an MSI package the user doesn't need admin permissions (I'm not sure or you need to distribute it via AD)

Good point dfra603. If the app is assigned in a gpo then permissions are not an issue. I don't like the idea of giving the user permission to install to local workstation. With every download available on the internet the workstation will soon become full of unnecessary programs.
