Install blue screen with Windows 98/2000/XP

After attempting to install various operating system
on my PC, I am calling for help.

I've just got a brand new PC to setup:
Pentium IV - 1,7 Ghz
DDR SDRAM, 1 DIMM of 512 Mb
MB Asus P4B266
Video Leadtek GeForce 2 64Mb
Hard Drive IBM 60Gb
DVD-ROM or CR-RW IDE Plextor (tried both)

I left everything else out to try to tackle the problem.

Windows XP :
Boot on CD, the blue screen arrives at various stages
but I've never been able to go anywhere more than the
partitioning, formating and begining of file copy (no
graphical menu at all)

Fearing an incompatibility with XP I came back to win 98se.
Boot on floppy with CD-Rom support = fine.
Then I get a 100% reproducable error at the very
begining of the installation. 98 load its installation
assistant and then before geting the license agreement
dialog I get a fatal error in SUWIN.

I've tried everything I could think about (use CRW instead
of DVD, change disk cable or config DM33 or UDMA100, ...)

If you have any idea, feel free to let me know.

Is the hard drive partitioned and/or formatted? Is there any text along with the Blue Screen errors in XP?

Does the BIOS have a valid date/time set? Try setting BIOS defualts.

Is this a system you put together or bought as a whole?

I know Intel just announced DDR support in their 845 chipset and 2.2ghz PIV release...I didn't know it was already supported??

thanks for your reply.
to answer the questions:
1/ the HD is partitionned but only first partition is formatted. both NTFS and FAT32 have been tried with the same result.
2/ errors in XP are not always the same. sometimes look like bad IRQ settings, sometimes "attempt to write in read only memory block", sometimes just "Page fault".
3/ yes date/time are OK, and default have been tried too

I had quite the same problem with my PC, an Athlon 1,1 Ghz with 256 DDR and an ABIT KG7.
It was impossible to install any OS (W2K, WIN98, also linux), because the system was always crashing...

Finally, I found that it was my DDR DIMM that was defectuous.
You may try your DIMM on another PC and see if you have the same issue.

I had similair problem with a pII, 333, 64 meg system, with cd and cd burner(Philips) on it. Found I had to add more ram, due to cd burner being memory hog.
Tested 64 meg sticks in another pc and they work fine.
Something may be using more memory.

First thing to do is go into setup (BIOS) and turn off anti-virus.This is usually turned on by default.
When you try installing an OS it trys to enter settings to the master boot record.The built in anti-virus sees this as suspisious activity and wont let you proceed.
