Tried to follow directions installing this video card, uninstalling references to Intel on-board video (HP Pavilion 8543C, 3yrs old 192KBram 466 celeron) But WIn98SE keeps tryin to re-install "Generic PCI graphics adapter" on reboot. I installed the ATI drivers from their cd, but I left some references to the INTEL in the hardware profile, not certain if i could remove them all. Theres sev things listed under "SYSTEM DEVICES" such as INtel 82801AA LPC Interface controller, A 'PCI'bridge..INTEL 82801AA SMBus Controller, and Intel82801 System and Graphics controller...anybody know if i should remove all that also, and reinstall my ATI software? Tony

Couple of things:
Not being familiar with this motherboard model I will quote the norm which is to disable onboard VGA in the bios so it forces it to use the ATI card.
The other point is an observation, I don't think the aging ATI expert card is going to give you any better performance than the onboard VGA? or if it does it will be marginal.
You will need a Geforce2 / Radeon or above to better what you already have. Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Yep I tried that . This Phoenix bios doesnt give you an option to disable the onboard video-It gives an option of assigning 512 or 1MB memory to it, but when i dig further I find no option to disable it.I thought all the BIos would let u do that. I just hoped that plugging in a video card, would disable the onboard stuff automatically. Its an old computer , so I bought a cheap vid card to try it. It stopped crashing so much on shutdown so I think it has helped some. Thks Tony

tonyh687; do not mess with any of your controllers.
right click my computer>properties>device manager>display adapters>select; disable in this hardware profile, referring to your standard vga. when you see the red x it it is disabled. If you fell you have messed up the bios , go back to bios and choose>reset defaults and exit. You have choosen a motherboard that is hard to work with. read my threads over the past week. You do need a better video card, dont think i would reccomend an ati, but then after a week of this and that and a lot of foul language, the ATI RADEON 7500 has come around is much better than onboard graphics. I think if you choose geforce you would need a bigger power supply. anyway good luck, you will need it. PEARL LOL

thanks Killowhat, I didnt choose the motherboard lol it came with the puter(before I knew enough about them to pick)
Anyway I just wanted someting in place of ONBOARD video which was suckingup CPU cycles. I think it did help my win98shutdown crashing, it hangs up much less now that I have this cheapo vid card in a slot. Appreciate your tips. Think Im about to put this one back and get a new machine.

that would be the best to do if your pocket book can handle it.I have spent so much on this compaq on upgrades, would have paid for the mobo and cpu. but for me to build a kick ass machine im looking at 1200-1500.00, not including monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers. my family says not to, just keep upgrading the compaq. tough decissions. LOL PEARL
