I performed a hardware upgrade to a PIII pci motherboard and replaced the nic with a 3C905B Tx-NM card. The system seems to be able to identify the card and the card settings but fails on initialization.

The message in the hardware section of the boot process is:

%e3H 0xA800-0xA81F 15 - 3Com 3C90x, unit=0 SetupAdapter error 3

and the next line reads:

%e3H 0xA800-0xA81F 15 - 3Com 3C90x, unit=0

Further along in the boot process I see the message that the network adapter failed initialization and the network software did not load.

If I change the nic irq from 15 to 11 (using the 3Com diag program in Dos) then the above messages correctly reflect the change but the error still occurs.

I have downloaded the latest drivers from 3Com but the results are still the same. There is no support available from 3Com.

If anyone knows what SetupAdapter error 3 is and what will fix the problem I would greatly appreciate a response.

I am willing to use another adapter if I knew which pci adapter would work with 3.2v4.2

Thanks,

After trying several tips and suggestions from the internet, I finally read my question again and took my own advice. I removed the 3-Com card, installed a generic PCI nic, installed the drivers that came with the card and was up and operating in a short time.

I am an A+ and CNA certified technician familiar only with MS Operating Systems. I need to find out how to install a PCI NIC to a Unix machine. Can anyone point me to some informative sources? THANKS!

well, depending on your flavor of Unix, you can go to any of several web sites that will point you in the right direction.

Normally, in SCO at least, you would get the latest driver for your "flavor" of Unix, pop the card in and run "netconfig" and set your IP, etc and that should work

If you give some more details on what flavor and exactly what you're trying to do, I could possibly help you out more.
