I've got a crash-and-burn box I'm using for lab work at home-

Compaq Proliant 1500
128MB RAM
Dual P5-166
8.6GB hardware RAID 0 disk array

The machine originally had a single processor and Win2K server installed. I decided to add the second processor and upgrade the HAL as described in various posts seen in this forum, but the system would not boot after the HAL was replaced.

Being a test box I reformatted the drive and began a scratch reinstallation, but after the first install re-boot the system dies with a stop 0x7b Inaccessible_boot_device. I can install NT 4.0 with dual support, but I can't install or upgrade to 2000?

Any ideas out there?

Well, in my illustrious experience, the Inaccessible_boot_device is usually due to the O/S inability to initiate a driver for your hard disk. Are you using the W2k server CD to boot and install, or do you still have those proprietary Compaq start CD's? If you have the Compaq ones , use them. If not, you may need to F6 during setup to install a third party driver....

I thought of that, but the system installs flawlessly with just a single cpu. I'm leaning towards something in the HAL, hopefully Compaq has an updated version for the SystemPro compliant servers. Anyhow, I inherited this system from a scrap room so I haven't got the original CD's- I think we have a Smart Start subscription at work so that's my next stop.

Save yourself headaches in the long run and use the Compaq SmartStart CD's to install the OS...the inaccessable boot device is usually due to the OS not having the proper driver (Compaq RAID controller or SCSI controller) for your system.

Are you installing on a fixed single IDE drive or to a hardware RAID cage or SCSI drive?

If you use the SmartStart CD's it will configure the system the way it is supposed to be for trouble free setup and performance.

I have a copy of the latest smart start CD so we'll see where that leads...
