Drive make clicking noise, somebody suggested might be Rotor? Trying sticking in freezer- no luck. No indication previously to impending destruction. IBM 30 GB ATA/IDE no help at IBM, or the buck passed to Hitachi. Any recourse other than HD recovery specialists?

I just had the exact situation with my Inspiron. Apparently with this particular hard drive in Dell laptops this is a common problem.

If the computer is still under warranty with Dell, they will replace the drive at no charge if you return the defective drive.

I of course needed to get back my data and had to keep the drive to send it off to a data recovery company so I ended up paying $179 to Dell for the drive and $800 to the data recovery people to get back my data.

If you have reached the point where the computer boots and does not recognize there is a hard drive installed, then it is too late to do anything other then replace the drive and send the drive off for data recovery.

how was hard drive recovery? Did they trransfer files or apps n files. Can they jus place disc into new drive if undamaged??

On my recovery they were able to get back all my information - files, apps, and the like. The way it is done is by opening up the disc, removing the platters inside and using a special device to take the information off each individual platter. I requested to receive my data back on CD but you can request to have the data copied to a new hard drive and they will send it to you that way. Unforunately after they open the hard drive and remove that platters they can not be used again.

new update, got adapter for hard drive and hooked up to desktop, it spun! Problem is my motherboard only support one pin set (K8). Sooo... i need an adapter for the 40 pin that is used in my raid so i can plug it into my other adapter end -44 pin. Hard too find such parts :( If i can find it i will slave it and transfer onto remaing drive :)
