Inserting Detail Line Numbers

I'n Access 2000, how can I insert detail line numbers? Example of what I'm looking for is.

My report pulls from a query that pulls the name, address, and phone number of individuals in the database based on birth year. I would like to have them numbered 1 thru whatever on each detail line. This is being used as a draft list for baseball teams and the coaches will call out the "player number" instead of the player name.

For the life of me I can't find this in my Access Bible.

I don't want to use the player I.D. that is stored in the database.
