INIT: cannot execute /sbin/agetty

a fresh installation of slackware (and done correctly). and it gives me this

INIT: cannot execute /sbin/agetty

over and over until it kills all of the runlevels. then, obviously, i cant log in to see if agetty exists or what. and ive attempted installation 5 times with the same result. what the hell is going on? žÅNžÅ

from the man page:

getty opens a tty port, prompts for a login name and invokes the /bin/login command. It is normally invoked by init(8).

Could the CD image you downloaded be corrupt? A few mismatched bits on the agetty package would have screwed up that whole install. Download that package directly from the slackware mirrors and compare the cd file with the downloaded file. If they match, you know I'm wrong..

If I am wrong, I havent the foggiest what it could be. Please let Tek-Tips members know if their posts were helpful.

well, this is the slackware cd ive used for quite some time, and its worked before, so thats not the problem. but, apparently, my second machines cdrom drive doesnt like the slackware cd, cause when i stuck the hard drive in my primary box and used that to install linux, it worked wonderfully. but now i have another problem, which i will start a new thread for seeing as its a different problem
