I have acquired a network admin position and in doing so inherited a starplus DHS phone system. At this point I am not even sure of the model number of the main control box but I do have an SP7420-00 analog adapter connected to it. It has been working fine until today when I lost one of our 5 lines. It Says “line 3 unavailable “ inbound calls will ring but the system will not let you pick that line up. I called the phone service to show that # busy until I can resolve the issues. Any ideas would be helpful.

Madsworld:

Have you resolved the line 3 problem with your DHS system? I will help you any way that I can as I've install many DHS systems over the years! You mentioned having an Analog Adapter, do you have voicemail on the system? Also, has anyone messed around in the database? It is very unusual for the system to just remove access from line 3 for no reason??

Thanks for the response. I was able to get it fixed this morning. The bosses had left the admin password set as the default and you were right on the money when you asked if anyone had messed with the database, someone had removed line 3 from the system. I reset line 3 and changed the admin password.

From your response I am sure that you either have the Tech manuals or have programmed the system before! If you run into any issues, I'll be glad to assist you!

FYI, The DHS system is a very good product and was a great to sell around 1997 & 98 as Vodavi had great pricing on "Package Deals". (Vodavi does the same thing with the STS system these days). The limitations with the DHS came when adding things like Caller ID as it required an external box and wasn't built into the system and Voicemail had to be integrated through analog ports using In-band integration. Vodavi has a small voice processing platform up to 8 ports called the Dispatch that works very well with the DHS and Dispatch was upgraded to the Digital Dispatch but it doesn't interface with the DHS as far as I know. Anyway, by the time you had to purchase all of the "Add-ons" it was just as cost effective to go with the Nortel Norstar or Lucent product. The good thing about the DHS is that it works well, the telephones are made well and I rarely have a telephone go out and the system is reliable. Now that these systems are getting some age on them one problem that has surfaced is the battery that holds the system programming (RAM memory)has a 5 year life cycle and I have had a few systems to lose power and the memory was erased and the system had to be reprogrammed. The memory capacitor (Battery) can be replaced (not too difficult to do) for less than $10.00. This is a little history and my experience with this product that I hope helps you and increases your confidence in the DHS. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns with the system.

Thanks for the response. We do have the voicemail system and overall the DHS seems to be working well. We are adding a caller ID box by the end of this week and I will let you know how it goes.

Madsworld:

Just a little "FYI". If your adding the Caller ID box you either already have an options board or are installing one with the CID equipment. I have the option card to be very sensitive for some reason and have replaced that card on a few occassion and could only conclude that the tech didn't use a grounding strap while working on it or possibly touched the components while install the Caller ID box and wasn't grounded and caused static discharge to knock the card out of service. Make sure that you have a static wrist strap or discharge yourself to ground before touching the option card or working around the CID box. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
